2019 Oscars Winners – Find out who came out on top

This year’s Academy Awards have come to an end and this time it was a very to-the-point ceremony without a host. With all of the drama and controversy in the lead-up to the ceremony this could have been a disaster. But the Academy have kept it together, doing away with a bunch of the gimmicky stuff and giving us what we want, all of the awards televised, and the song performances. It looks like the way forward may be to continue without a host because it seems to be working.

We saw Bohemian Rhapsody walk away with the most awards of the night, four, with Black Panther, Roma, and Green Book following with 3 a piece. Great to see Black Panther walk away with awards for Production Design and Costume Design despite thinking The Favourite should have taken both. Spike Lee winning his first Academy Award has been a long time coming. BlacKkKlansman and Green Book get recognised for their screenplays. Bohemian Rhapsody wins for its achievements in sound.

Check out the results below as we now wait til next year’s Academy Awards.

My prediction will be highlighted in GREEN.

Whereas the winner will be highlighted in RED.

If you don’t see a prediction highlighted in GREEN that’s because it’s the same as the winner.

Best Picture

Black Panther

BlaKkKlansman

Bohemian Rhapsody

The Favourite

Green Book

Roma

A Star is Born

Vice

And with that, the major award for the night goes to Green Book as oppose to Roma. I personally wanted Green Book to bring this one home but I thought Roma was going to be too strong. Seeing Green Book win for its screenplay I thought lowered its chances at the big one. Green Book was my favourite of the nominees with phenomenal performances, incredible screenplay, and an all round incredible film.

Actor in a Leading Role

Christian Bale, Vice

Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born

Willem Dafoe, At Eternity’s Gate

Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody

Viggo Mortensen, Green Book

Well as much as I’d have loved to see Viggo Mortensen win it only makes sense that Rami Malek wins for the best performance of his career. He completely transformed into Freddie Mercury and was the best element of Bohemian Rhapsody. His performance is why you see that film so very well deserved.

Actress in a Leading Role

Yalitza Aparicio, Roma

Glenn Close, The Wife

Olivia Colman, The Favourite

Lady Gaga, A Star is Born

Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me?

WOW!!! This is by far the biggest surprise of the Oscars so far. I would have loved to see Lady Gaga or Yalitza Aparicio take home this prestigious award for their incredible performances and I was convinced Glenn Close had this one in the bag. So to see Olivia Colman prevail is a definite surprise. But she put in a great performance in The Favourite so it is very well deserved and great to see her win her first Oscar from her first nomination.

Actor in a Supporting Role

Mahershala Ali, Green Book

Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman

Sam Elliott, A Star is Born

Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Sam Rockwell, Vice

Well absolutely no one would have expected otherwise here as Mahershala Ali‘s performance in Green Book was incredible through every scene. Glad he got the win and here’s to hoping the film picks up some more awards throughout the night.

Actress in a Supporting Role

Amy Adams, Vice

Marina de Tavira, Roma

Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk

Emma Stone, The Favourite

Rachel Weisz, The Favourite

This award kicked off the night and with a number of deserving actors going up for the win it was always going to be tough but Regina King has come out on top. I personally didn’t see If Beale Street Could Talk but she was the favourite going in so there’s no doubt she deserved the win. Congratulations on her first Oscar nomination and win which she closed out with an emotional speech.

Directing

Spike Lee, BlaKkKlansman

Paweł Palikowski, Cold War

Yorgos Lanthimos, The Favourite

Alfonso Cuarón, Roma

Adam McKay, Vice

Alfonso Cuarón backs up his Cinematography win with a Directing win that I didn’t think was gone elsewhere. His directing and the way he pulled everything in this film together from the story, to the cinematography, to the performances was just incredible. Now let’s hope he can bring in the big one.

Cinematography

Cold War

The Favourite

Never Look Away

Roma

A Star is Born

Well no surprises here, Roma is an incredible film and the cinematography by Alfonso Cuarón is truly awe-inspiring. Definitely the best cinematography work of the year and very well deserving. This won’t be the only award Roma wins so keep an eye out.

Animated Feature Film

Incredibles 2

Isle of Dogs

Mirai

Ralph Breaks the Internet

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Again, no surprises here, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse had so much momentum going into this award season that it was almost never going to lose. Good to see a studio other than Disney get the award, so I guess I’m going to need to check this one out now.

Film Editing

BlacKkKlansman

Bohemian Rhapsody

The Favourite

Green Book

Vice

Well it was between Vice and Bohemian Rhapsody and it looks like the Queen biopic has come out on top. I thought this had a very good chance with how it prevailed over the director change mid-production so it’s good to see it get recognised for that.

Music (Original Score)

Black Panther

BlacKkKlansman

If Beale Street Could Talk

Isle of Dogs

Mary Poppins Returns

Well, I predicted BlacKkKlansman but I said I’d like to see Black Panther steal this one and that’s exactly what happened here. Honestly this award could have gone a number of ways and I am glad it went with Black Panther because that score was a great and powerful one.

Music (Original Song)

“All the Stars”, Black Panther

“I’ll Fight”, RBG

“The Place Where Lost Things Go”, Mary Poppins Returns

“Shallow”, A Star is Born

“When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings”, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Truly incredible. This was a one horse race for sure but there is no other song or artist this year more deserving of this award. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper performed this song to perfection and it is phenomenal both in and out of the context of the film. The speech from Lady Gaga just caps off an incredible award win here.

Sound Editing

Black Panther

Bohemian Rhapsody

First Man

A Quiet Place

Roma

Alright, well, contrary to my prediction that First Man or my thoughts that A Quiet Place is the most deserving of the win it turns out Bohemian Rhapsody has come out and stolen it. It did have a strong chance since the sound editing was top notch so not too many surprises here. Well deserved by the musical biopic.

Sound Mixing

Black Panther

Bohemian Rhapsody

First Man

Roma

A Star is Born

With that, Bohemian Rhapsody manages to secure both of the Academy Awards for sound and it’s well deserved. Sound Mixing is the one I predicted it would win but coming away with both only makes sense so well done there. A Star is Born couldn’t bring this one home as I hoped but it won’t leave tonight empty handed.

Writing (Adapted Screenplay)

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

BlacKkKlansman

Can You Ever Forgive Me?

If Beale Street Could Talk

A Star is Born

Well, I did say A Star is Born had a great chance but I also thought BlacKkKlansman had a a shot at stealing it and that’s exactly what it did. After a long career it’s great to see the talented Spike Lee finally win his first Oscar which has been a long time coming. What this tells me after both the writing categories went to this and Green Book is that Roma is a near lock for the big one.

Writing (Original Screenplay)

The Favourite

First Reformed

Green Book

Roma

Vice

I love seeing this award go to Green Book because the screenplay for that film was incredible. Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen delivered the lines incredibly well but the writing was something else entirely. Lets hope that from here it can take home the big one but even if it doesn’t this is a massive award that is very well deserved.

Visual Effects

Avengers: Infinity War

Christopher Robin

First Man

Ready Player One

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Well, my prediction here was wrong as not only did Avengers: Infinity War not win but the other big names in Ready Player One and Solo: A Star Wars Story missed out also. First Man being recognised is great for that film sitting outside of the big-budget action films that usually win.
